Sooo this one might get a little sciencey later on but I’ll try and keep it simple as best as I can. The example I’m about to use is abit over the top but you’ll get the idea, say you’re going to work and your waiting for your train but it’s delayed this might make you think something like this “this train is going to make me late for work, I’ll get caught up in reception because it’ll be so busy, I’ll miss that meeting with my boss, she’s going to give me an official warning for this, she’s already for an excuse to get rid of me, I’m going to be behind on my days work, I’m going to have to stay behind after my shift finishes, I’m not going to get back in time for my sons hockey game… ”
As I say, that is an exaggerated example but for some people it’s not too far from the truth, something happens and you have a negative thought this starts off a ‘mini-movie’ in your head where one negative thought leads to another, this creates a downward spiral of negative thoughts. This may seem harmless on the surface but these negative thoughts actually effect your body as well as making you stressed and anxious.
When you think bad thoughts it generates emotions such as stress and anxiety this causes your brain to generate chemicals, these chemicals make you feel worse which then makes you get even more anxious/stressed. However that being said the same happens when you have positive thoughts, your brain will release chemicals that make you feel good and happy.
Okay so how does this work? I’m not a doctor or scientist so I can’t tell you the complexities of this but there is a gland in your brain called the hypothalamus, this is the part that decides which chemicals to secrete based on a thought or external situation. The fact that it dispenses chemicals in response to your thoughts means that changing your thoughts from negative to positive it acts according and produces chemicals which make you feel good.
This is more of an informative post than anything but I guess the point is if you stop the negative thought when it first comes into your head and replace it with a more positive thought you will prevent that downward spiral and you will instead make yourself feel happier.
Like I said I’m not a doctor or a scientist, all the information in the blog post was gathered from reading ‘Mind Power’ by James Borg, this is a very good book and has changed my way of thinking for the better, this is where I got the title of this blog post from, along with the quote that I am going to leave you with:
“Thoughts don’t have power unless you give them power.”
